How much storage does a high-volume sports photographer need?

Budget roughly 2-5 GB per fixture for delivered JPEGs, and ten times that if you keep RAWs online. A photographer shooting two fixtures a week needs somewhere between 200 GB and 1 TB a season. Expiring old galleries, rather than buying more storage, is what keeps that number flat year on year.

A rough model

  • 800-1,500 frames per fixture is normal for action sport.
  • Cull to 150-300 keepers.
  • At 4-8 MB per delivered JPEG that is roughly 2-5 GB per fixture.
  • RAWs, if you keep them online, multiply that by about ten.

Those are planning figures, not measurements: your camera, your keeper rate and your export settings move them substantially.

The real lever is expiry, not capacity

Storage grows forever if nothing ever closes. A gallery that expires at the end of a season, with RAWs archived off the hot tier, keeps a working set roughly constant no matter how many years you shoot.
